Summary

Indirect Tax Senior Manager is responsible for managing the indirect tax function of CHS Inc. supporting the accurate invoicing and payment of indirect taxes, tax planning, tax compliance, systems development & maintenance, and accounting for indirect taxes. This position is also responsible for developing staff and the overall indirect tax strategy of the Company. This individual manages a tax department in a Company with significant number of indirect tax types, complex transactional computer systems and a high volume of tax filings across the enterprise. This position requires a deep understanding of the divisional operations, federal and state tax laws and regulations as well as the ability to manage and motivate employees to a high output level while maintaining accuracy in returns.

Responsibilities

North American Indirect Tax Compliance Management 
• Manage comprehensive functions relating to motor fuel taxes including: 
o Analyze potential sales and marketing strategies in current and expanded 
trade territories to determine if they are allowable within our current license 
and system structure and react accordingly in support of the same. 
o Review current and new federal and state tax law for potential impact to 
CHS. Provide leadership in implementing changes. 
o Translate tax reporting based on state laws into the reporting software. 
Accurately configure tax systems to comply and or communicate 
requirements to IT staff for inclusion into software as applicable. 
o Manage federal and state audits pertaining to all motor fuel taxes and credits. 
Research tax positions put forth by auditors. Negotiate resolutions to audit 
issues. 
• Sales and use taxes: Manage corporation wide sales tax administration, reporting 
and remittance involving a multitude of business segments and transaction 
jurisdictions 
• Fertilizer tonnage taxes: Direct staff on proper application of fertilizer taxes in over 
30 states for transactions relating to Country Operations and Agronomy. Insure 
proper and accurate divisional invoicing. Resolve reporting and invoicing issues. 
• Feed tonnage taxes: Direct staff on proper application of grain checkoff fees in over 
30 states, maintain tax determination for SAP, prepare and file Canadian checkoff 
returns, and resolve reporting and invoicing issues. 
• First purchaser fees (Checkoff): Direct staff on proper application of grain checkoff 
fees, maintain tax determination for SAP for US and Canadian jurisdictions, prepare 
and file Canadian checkoff returns, and resolve reporting and invoicing issues. 
• Other indirect taxes: Manage the administration of other indirect taxes including 
Canada GST, IFTA, WA B&O tax, federal Oil Spill and Superfund tax 

Continuous Improvement and Indirect Tax Compliance Continuity 
• Develop and train staff to assume managerial duties of the indirect tax function, 
including indirect tax compliance and indirect tax software systems. 
• Automation of compliance functions. 
• Increasing function efficiencies 

Enterprise Systems Oversight and Implementation 
• Provide leadership in the overall design and functionality for Indirect Taxes in 
SAP/CHS1 across all business lines. Incorporate technical knowledge, business 
operations and system capabilities into the project. 
• Responsible for indirect tax engine selected for integration with SAP/CHS1 to drive 
all tax calculations and reporting. 
• Drive the end results to satisfies business needs, tax imposition and reporting for all 
tax types and jurisdictions 

Minimum Qualifications (required)

• Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Taxation or Business

• 5+ years of multistate indirect tax experience. 

Additional Qualifications

• 10+ years of multistate indirect tax experience.

 • Strong knowledge of US Federal and State indirect taxation.

 • Comprehensive project management skills with the ability to control multiple projects with changing priorities and schedules.

• Must exhibit business acumen and manage to our corporate values and goals.

• Accomplished professional presence required along with tax issue assertiveness, advanced financial analysis skills and sophisticated communication abilities to convey the tax impacts of complex technical issues to non-tax stakeholders.

• Strong training and people development skills.

• Strong negotiating and persuasive skills.

• Substantial experience developing and maintaining indirect tax compliance and determination systems.
