Summary
CHS, Inc. has an exciting opportunity in our energy department for a propane trader to develop and execute trading strategies surrounding but not limited to our wholesale business as well as participate in cash markets to bring maximum value to the propane business unit.
The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with strong negotiation and decision-making skills. A detail-oriented approach combined with strong analytical capabilities—including fundamental and technical analysis—is essential for driving added value within the propane business unit.
Position is hybrid out of our global corporate office in Inver Grove Heights, MN or our CHS Energy location in Calgary, AB Canada.
Responsibilities
- Manage all propane rail positions for both term and spot contracts on a daily basis and provide index markets to our wholesale team and customers.
- Partner with the wholesale team to achieve desired inventory levels and capture maximum value for the CHS network of rail terminals.
- Develop and implement hedging strategies to manage risk in propane book of business.
- Locate and capitalize on arbitrage opportunities in the physical and financial markets.
- Be accountable for monthly trading profits and losses.
- Manage all our rail shipments and inventories to minimize detention and demurrage expenses while optimizing our rail fleet performance.
- Maintain daily positions within CHS limits and mark to market risk.
- Monitor forward curves and leverage CHS storage assets to enhance profitability.
- Trade physical Natural Gas Liquids (NGLs) in future markets, physical markets, and OTC (over the counter) markets.
- Research global, domestic and regional market information and analyze data in order to make accurate price forecasts.
- Communicate research to peers and management via presentations, daily/monthly meetings and market reports.
- Be a self-starter and take the initiative to resolve issues when they arise with a focus on the overall team benefit.
- Develop and maintain strong working relationships within the company and industry so that CHS is positioned to succeed.
- Collaborate with the propane team and work closely with sales to make the best decisions that support overall business performance with a focus on finding alternatives as markets change.
Minimum Qualifications (required)
- High School diploma or GED
- 4 + years experience in energy, trading, supply or commodity-related business to include merchandising/arbitrage experience, daily position reporting, and/or profit/loss management and budget reporting experience
Additional Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree preferred in Business Management or Economics
- Management of physical Natural Gas Liquids (NGL) experience
- Ability to understand a forward market curve and spread trading
- Prior PowerBI and SAP experience preferred
- Rail logistics and/or merchandising experience
- Proven listening and communication skills

Travel up to 20%.
CHS offers a competitive total rewards package. Compensation includes base wage and, depending upon position, may include other earnings such as bonus, incentives and commissions. Actual pay offered will vary based on multiple factors which may include, without limitation, experience, education, training, specialized skills and certifications, minimum wage/salary requirements under local law.
